(October 25, 2007)—Citing their leadership and support of animal welfare policy, the Humane Society Legislative Fund (HSLF) announced its endorsement of 43 New Jersey Senate and Assembly candidates in the Nov. 6 election.
"In order to have humane laws, we need to elect humane lawmakers," said Michael Markarian, president of Humane Society Legislative Fund. "We urge Garden State voters to elect candidates who care about the humane treatment of animals."
New Jersey lawmakers have recently taken several positive steps to protect the welfare of animals. Legislators have passed a bill to protect pets in disasters, have banned Internet hunting, and have allocated funds for non-lethal black bear management. The General Assembly is considering other important bills related to animal protection, such as providing more balanced representation on the Fish and Game Council, requiring the use of alternatives to product testing on animals, strengthening the laws against animal fighting, and protecting the safety of our pet food supply.
